Essential Things to Know Before Traveling to Armenia

CAPITAL Yerevan

OFFICIAL LANGUAGE Armenian

RELIGION Armenia is predominantly Christian, with the Armenian Apostolic Church as the main denomination (around 92-95% of the population identifies with it). Small minorities include Yazidis, Catholics, Protestants, and Muslims. Religious tolerance is generally practiced.

PASSPORTS A valid passport is required for entry (valid at time of entry; 6 months beyond stay recommended). Many nationalities, including USA, EU, UK, Canada, Australia, and over 60 others, enjoy visa-free entry for up to 180 days per year. Check the official Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website for your nationality, as some require eVisa or visa on arrival. Temporary visa exemptions may apply for holders of valid residence permits from the US, EU/Schengen, or certain Gulf countries (up to 180 days within one year, valid until mid-2026 in some cases). Always verify latest rules, as they can change.

ELECTRICITY Standard voltage is 220-230V at 50Hz. Power sockets are types C and F (two round pins, Schuko). Travelers from other regions need a power adapter; voltage converters rarely needed for modern dual-voltage devices.

CURRENCY INFORMATION Armenia's national currency is the Armenian Dram (AMD). Notes: 1000, 2000, 5000, 10,000, 20,000, 50,000, 100,000 AMD; coins: smaller denominations. Credit Cards: Visa and Mastercard widely accepted in cities (Yerevan), hotels, and restaurants; less so in rural areas. Carry cash for markets and small purchases. ATM: Common in cities; international cards work, but fees may apply. Withdraw larger amounts. Inform your bank of travel. Currency Exchange: Best at banks or official offices; avoid street rates. Cash is king in many places.

CLOTHING Casual and comfortable is standard. Summers hot (pack light layers, sun protection); winters cold (especially mountains—warm coat, boots). Modest clothing for churches/monasteries (cover shoulders/knees). Jeans and t-shirts fine; layers for variable weather.

COMMUNICATION & EMAIL Telephone Emergency: 112 or 101/102/103 specifics. Country code: +374. Mobile Phones Good coverage in cities; spotty in remote areas. GSM bands standard; most phones work. Buy local prepaid SIM (Beeline, Viva-MTS, Ucom) for cheap data/calls. Internet Wi-Fi common in hotels/cafés; mobile data affordable via local SIM.

WEATHER & CLIMATE Continental climate: hot summers, cold winters. Best time: May-June and September-October (mild, fewer crowds). Summer (July-August) hot; winter snowy in mountains. Seasons: Summer (June-August): warm/hot; Winter (December-February): cold/snowy; Spring/Autumn: pleasant.

MEAL COSTS (approximate) Basic lunchtime menu (with drink): 2000-4000 AMD (~$5-10) Fast food combo: 1500-2500 AMD (~$4-6) Boneless chicken breast (500g): ~1500 AMD (~$4) 1 liter milk: ~400 AMD (~$1)

FOOD & DRINKS Specialties: Khorovats (barbecue), dolma, lavash, khash (tripe soup), gata (sweet pastry), fresh fruits, mountain herbs. National drinks: Cognac (famous Armenian brandy), wine, tan (yogurt drink), local beers.

SUGGESTED TIPPING SCALE Tipping not obligatory but appreciated (5-10% for good service, especially in Yerevan). Round up bills in restaurants/cafés. Cash preferred. Guides/drivers: 1000-2000 AMD per day if excellent.

HEALTH & MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS & GUIDELINES No mandatory vaccines; recommend routine (hepatitis A/B, tetanus). Tap water often not potable—use bottled. Travel insurance recommended. Pharmacies widespread; good facilities in Yerevan.

TRAVEL INSURANCE Highly recommended for medical emergencies, as coverage varies. Review for activities (hiking, etc.). Home plans may be limited abroad.
