Preparing to go to bulgaria
Essential Things to Know Before Traveling to Bulgaria
CAPITAL Sofia
OFFICIAL LANGUAGE Bulgarian
RELIGION Bulgaria is predominantly Eastern Orthodox Christian, with the Bulgarian Orthodox Church as the traditional religion (around 59-76% of the population identifies with it, varying by source). There are Muslim minorities (primarily Sunni Turks and Pomaks, ~8-10%), as well as small Protestant, Catholic, and other groups. A significant portion is non-religious or undeclared (~10-30%). Religious tolerance is generally practiced, with freedom of religion protected.
PASSPORTS Bulgaria is part of the Schengen Area (fully operational as of 2024-2025). A valid passport is required, with at least 3 months validity beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area (6 months recommended). Visa-free entry for tourism or short stays up to 90 days in any 180-day period applies to citizens of the USA, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, and many other visa-exempt countries (including most non-EU nationalities under Schengen rules).
Starting in the last quarter of 2026, visa-exempt travelers will require an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) pre-authorization (online application, small fee ~€7, valid for 3 years or until passport expires). Proof of onward travel, accommodation, and sufficient funds may be requested at borders. Always check the official Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs or ETIAS website for your nationality and updates, as rules can change. Bulgaria uses the Bulgarian Lev (BGN), but the Euro is widely accepted in tourist areas (fixed rate ~1.95 BGN = €1).
ELECTRICITY Standard voltage is 230V at 50Hz. Power sockets are types C (two round pins) and F (Schuko, two round pins with grounding clips).
Travelers from countries with different plugs (e.g., US Type A/B, UK Type G) will need a power adapter. Voltage converters are rarely needed for modern dual-voltage devices (phones, laptops); check appliance labels. A voltage converter may be required for single-voltage 110-120V appliances.
CURRENCY INFORMATION Bulgaria's national currency is the Bulgarian Lev (BGN or лв). Notes come in 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 BGN; coins in 1, 2 BGN and smaller stotinki. The Lev is pegged to the Euro at a fixed rate (~1.95 BGN = €1); Euros are widely accepted in tourist spots, but change is often given in Lev.
Credit Cards: Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted in cities, hotels, restaurants, and tourist areas; American Express less so. Carry cash for rural areas, small shops, markets, and public transport, as cards may not be accepted for small amounts.
ATM: ATMs are common in cities (Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas) and dispense Lev. International cards (Visa/Mastercard with Cirrus/Maestro) work; fees may apply from your bank and local ATM. Withdraw larger amounts to minimize fees. Inform your bank of travel to avoid blocks.
Currency Exchange: Available at banks, airports, hotels, and exchange offices (better rates than airports/hotels). Avoid street exchanges for safety.
CLOTHING Casual and comfortable clothing is the norm. Summers are hot (especially coast and inland—light layers, sun protection); winters cold (mountains snowy—warm coat, boots). Modest attire for monasteries/churches (cover shoulders/knees). Jeans and t-shirts fine; pack layers for variable weather. Sturdy shoes for hiking (Rila, Pirin mountains); swimwear for Black Sea beaches.
COMMUNICATION & EMAIL Telephone Emergency number: 112 (EU standard). International country code: +359.
Mobile Phones Coverage is good in populated/coastal areas; spotty in remote mountains. Bulgaria uses GSM bands (900/1800MHz); most modern phones work. EU roaming free/no extra charges for many; non-EU can be pricey. Buy local prepaid SIM (A1, Yettel, Vivacom) at airport/shops—cheap data/calls (tourist SIMs available). eSIMs convenient.
Internet Wi-Fi widespread in hotels, cafés, restaurants, and cities. Mobile data affordable via local SIM; internet cafés less common but exist.
WEATHER & CLIMATE Continental climate: hot summers, cold winters; milder on Black Sea coast, colder in mountains.
Best time overall: May-June (spring) and September-October (autumn) for mild weather, fewer crowds, ideal hiking/beach. Summer (July-August) hot/peak season on coast; winter for skiing (Bansko, Borovets) but inland cold.
Seasons:
- December-February: Winter (cold, snowy mountains)
- March-May: Spring (mild, blooming)
- June-August: Summer (hot, sunny, Black Sea peak)
- September-November: Autumn (pleasant, harvest)
Coastal (Varna, Burgas): Best May-October. Mountains (Rila, Pirin): Best June-September. Inland (Sofia, Plovdiv): Avoid extreme summer heat/winter cold.
MEAL COSTS (approximate, in BGN or € equivalent) Basic lunchtime menu (with drink) in business district: 15-30 BGN (~€8-15) Combo meal in fast food: 10-20 BGN (~€5-10) Boneless chicken breast (500g): ~8-12 BGN (~€4-6) 1 liter milk: ~2-3 BGN (~€1-1.50)
Bulgaria is very budget-friendly—meals often under €10-15.

HEALTH & MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS & GUIDELINES No mandatory vaccinations for most travelers; recommend routine (hepatitis A/B, tetanus). Tap water safe in cities but bottled preferred in rural areas. Travel insurance highly recommended for medical coverage (facilities good in Sofia, limited rural). Pharmacies common.
TRAVEL INSURANCE Highly recommended—your home health plan may offer limited coverage abroad. Review policies for medical emergencies, trip cancellation, and activities (hiking, skiing). Some credit cards provide basic coverage, but verify adequacy.
