Essential Things to Know Before Traveling to Oman

CAPITAL Muscat

OFFICIAL LANGUAGE Arabic (Omani dialect is predominant). English is widely spoken in tourism, business, hotels, restaurants, malls, and by most Omanis under 40, as well as the large expatriate community.

RELIGION Islam is the official religion and predominant faith (approximately 85-90% of the population are Muslim, mostly Ibadi with Sunni and small Shia minorities). Non-Muslims (expatriates) include Hindus, Christians, Buddhists, and others (~10-15%). Oman is known for religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence. Respect Islamic customs: modest dress (cover shoulders and knees in public), no public displays of affection, no alcohol outside licensed hotels/restaurants, and be aware of prayer times (some businesses pause briefly). Mosques are beautiful but non-Muslims may only enter certain ones (e.g., Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque) with strict dress code (women need headscarf and full coverage; men long pants and long sleeves).

PASSPORTS A valid passport is required (valid for at least 6 months beyond arrival).

Most nationalities (over 100 countries, including USA, Canada, UK, EU countries, Australia, New Zealand, India, China, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, etc.) qualify for visa on arrival or visa-free entry for tourism stays of 10 to 30 days (depending on nationality). For example:

  • Citizens of USA, Canada, UK, EU, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, UAE, etc.: Visa-free for up to 14 days (extendable to 30 days).
  • Citizens of India, China, Russia, etc.: Visa on arrival for 10-30 days (single/multiple entry options).

An eVisa is available online for those not eligible for visa on arrival (apply via royalomenpolice.gov.om or evisa.rop.gov.om, fees vary ~OMR 5-20). Always check the official Royal Oman Police eVisa portal or Visit Oman website for your nationality and the latest rules, as policies can change. Proof of onward/return ticket, hotel booking, and sufficient funds may be requested. No exit visa required for tourists.

ELECTRICITY Standard voltage is 240V at 50Hz. Power sockets are primarily type G (three rectangular pins, British style).

Travelers from the US/Canada (Type A/B) or continental Europe (Type C/F) will need a power adapter. Voltage converters are rarely needed for modern dual-voltage devices (phones, laptops, cameras); check labels for 100-240V compatibility.

CURRENCY INFORMATION Oman's national currency is the Omani Rial (OMR). Notes: 100 baisa, ½, 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 OMR; coins: 5, 10, 25, 50 baisa. The OMR is one of the highest-valued currencies (pegged to USD at ~1 OMR = USD$2.60).

Credit Cards: Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted in hotels, malls, restaurants, and tourist areas; American Express accepted in many places but less universally. Carry cash for souqs, taxis, small shops, rural areas, and wadis.

ATM: ATMs are widespread (banks, malls, airports) and dispense OMR. International cards work; fees may apply (your bank + local ATM, usually OMR 0.5-2).

Currency Exchange: Available at banks, airports, hotels, and exchange offices (banks usually best rates). USD widely accepted (change in OMR).

CLOTHING Modest dress is required in public to respect local customs (cover shoulders and knees; women should cover hair when visiting mosques). Loose, breathable, long clothing is ideal in summer (extremely hot, 35-45°C/95-113°F). In winter (mild, 20-30°C/68-86°F), light layers. Swimwear fine at hotel pools/private beaches; cover up when leaving resorts. Western casual is common in Muscat malls/hotels, but modest is safer everywhere. Sturdy shoes for wadis, deserts, and hiking.

COMMUNICATION & EMAIL Telephone Emergency: 9999 (police/ambulance/fire). International country code: +968.

Mobile Phones Excellent coverage in cities, highways, and populated areas; limited in remote deserts/mountains. Oman uses GSM bands (900/1800MHz) and 5G; most unlocked phones work. Roaming expensive for non-GCC plans. Buy local prepaid SIM (Oman Mobile or Ooredoo) at airport (Muscat International), malls, or shops—affordable data plans (tourist SIMs with generous data). eSIMs supported.

Internet Wi-Fi widespread and free in hotels, malls, cafés, airports, and public spaces. Mobile data fast and cheap.

WEATHER & CLIMATE Desert/arid climate: extremely hot summers, mild winters; monsoon (khareef) in Salalah region (July-September, cooler and green).

Best time to visit: October to April (pleasant 25-35°C/77-95°F, low humidity, ideal for sightseeing, deserts, wadis, and beaches). May-September very hot (up to 45°C/113°F inland)—best for indoor malls, museums, or Salalah khareef (cooler, misty, green).

Seasons:

  • October-April: Winter (pleasant, peak season)
  • May-September: Summer (very hot, except Salalah khareef)

MEAL COSTS (approximate, in OMR) Basic lunchtime menu (with drink) in business district: OMR 3-7 (~$8-18) Combo meal in fast food: OMR 1.5-3 (~$4-8) Boneless chicken breast (500g): ~OMR 1-2 (~$2.60-5.20) 1 liter milk: ~OMR 0.5-0.8 (~$1.30-2.10)

Oman is moderately priced; meals often OMR 5-15 outside fast food.

FOOD & DRINKS Specialties:

  • Shuwa (slow-cooked lamb in underground oven)
  • Majboos / machboos (spiced rice with meat/chicken)
  • Mashuai (grilled kingfish)
  • Harees (wheat and meat porridge)
  • Omani halwa (sweet confection with nuts, rosewater)
  • Fresh dates and seafood (coastal)
  • Arabic mezze (hummus, falafel, tabbouleh)

National drinks: Omani coffee (qahwa with cardamom), karak tea (spiced milk tea), fresh juices, laban (buttermilk). Alcohol only in licensed hotels and select restaurants (not in public).

SUGGESTED TIPPING SCALE Tipping not obligatory (service charge often included), but appreciated in tourist areas.

  • Restaurant Server: Round up to nearest OMR 0.5-1 or add 10% for good service (cash preferred).
  • Café Server: Leave small change or round up.
  • Bartender (licensed venues): OMR 0.5-1 per drink or 10%.

  • Guides/Drivers: OMR 5-10 per day if excellent (per person).

HEALTH & MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS & GUIDELINES No mandatory vaccinations for most travelers; recommend routine (hepatitis A/B, tetanus, measles). Yellow fever vaccine required if coming from endemic areas. Tap water desalinated and safe but bottled preferred. Travel insurance highly recommended—healthcare excellent in Muscat (world-class hospitals). Pharmacies widespread.

TRAVEL INSURANCE Highly recommended—your home health plan may offer limited coverage abroad. Review policies for medical emergencies, trip cancellation, and activities (desert safaris, wadi hiking, diving). Some credit cards provide basic coverage, but verify adequacy.
