Essential Things to Know Before Traveling to Montenegro

CAPITAL Podgorica

OFFICIAL LANGUAGE Montenegrin (official; Serbian, Bosnian, Croatian, and Albanian are also in official use in some municipalities). English is widely spoken in tourist areas (Kotor, Budva, Tivat, Perast), hotels, restaurants, and by younger people.

RELIGION Montenegro is predominantly Eastern Orthodox Christian (around 72% of the population, mainly Montenegrin Orthodox Church and Serbian Orthodox Church). There are Muslim minorities (about 19%, mostly Bosniaks and Albanians), Catholics (~3%), and small Protestant and other groups. A portion is non-religious or undeclared. Religious tolerance is practiced, and Orthodox monasteries (e.g., Ostrog, Cetinje) and mosques are important cultural sites—modest dress (cover shoulders/knees) is expected when visiting religious places.

PASSPORTS Montenegro is not part of the Schengen Area or EU, but aligns with many EU visa policies. A valid passport is required (valid for at least 3 months beyond planned departure; 6 months recommended).

Visa-free entry for tourism stays up to 90 days applies to citizens of the USA, Canada, UK, EU countries, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, UAE, and many other nationalities (over 100 countries).

Citizens of visa-required countries can apply for an eVisa online (via gov.me or montenegro.travel) or visa on arrival in some cases. Always check the official Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro website or embassy for your nationality and the latest rules, as policies can change. Proof of onward travel, accommodation, and sufficient funds may be requested. No exit visa required for tourists.

ELECTRICITY Standard voltage is 230V at 50Hz. Power sockets are types C (two round pins) and F (Schuko, two round pins with grounding clips).

Travelers from countries with different plugs (e.g., US Type A/B, UK Type G) will need a power adapter. Voltage converters are rarely needed for modern dual-voltage devices (phones, laptops, cameras); check appliance labels.

CURRENCY INFORMATION Montenegro uses the Euro (EUR/€) as its official currency (unilaterally adopted). Notes: €5, €10, €20, €50, €100, €200, €500; coins: 1¢, 2¢, 5¢, 10¢, 20¢, 50¢, €1, €2.

Credit Cards: Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted in cities, hotels, restaurants, and tourist areas (Kotor, Budva, Tivat); American Express less common. Carry cash for rural areas, small shops, markets, public transport, and smaller towns.

ATM: ATMs are common in cities and coastal areas (dispense Euros). International cards (Visa/Mastercard/Cirrus/Maestro) work; fees may apply (your bank + local ATM). Withdraw larger amounts to minimize fees. Inform your bank of travel.

Currency Exchange: Available at banks, airports, hotels, and exchange offices (banks usually best rates). Avoid street exchanges.

CLOTHING Casual and comfortable is the norm. Summers hot (30-35°C/86-95°F on coast)—light, breathable clothing, hat, sunscreen. Winters mild on coast (5-15°C/41-59°F) but colder/snowy in mountains—warm coat, boots. Modest attire for monasteries/churches (cover shoulders/knees). Swimwear fine on beaches (Budva Riviera, Sveti Stefan); sturdy shoes for hiking (Durmitor, Lovćen National Parks). Layers for variable weather and altitude.

COMMUNICATION & EMAIL Telephone Emergency number: 112 (EU standard). International country code: +382.

Mobile Phones Good coverage in coastal areas and cities; spotty in remote mountains. Montenegro uses GSM bands (900/1800MHz); most modern phones work. EU roaming free/no extra charges for many; non-EU can be pricey. Buy local prepaid SIM (Telenor, M:tel, One) at airport (Tivat or Podgorica) or shops—cheap data plans (tourist SIMs available). eSIMs supported.

Internet Wi-Fi widespread in hotels, cafés, restaurants, and tourist towns. Mobile data affordable and reliable.

WEATHER & CLIMATE Mediterranean on coast (hot summers, mild winters); continental/mountainous inland (hot summers, cold winters with snow).

Best time overall: May-June and September-October (mild 20-28°C/68-82°F, fewer crowds, ideal for beaches/hiking). July-August hot/peak season on coast; winter (December-March) for skiing (Kolašin, Žabljak) but coastal mild.

Seasons:

  • December-February: Winter (mild coast, snowy mountains)
  • March-May: Spring (mild, blooming)
  • June-August: Summer (hot, sunny, beach peak)
  • September-November: Autumn (pleasant, harvest)

Coastal (Kotor Bay, Budva): Best May-October. Mountains (Durmitor, Prokletije): Best June-September for hiking; winter for skiing.

MEAL COSTS (approximate, in EUR) Basic lunchtime menu (with drink) in business district: €8-15 Combo meal in fast food: €5-10 Boneless chicken breast (500g): ~€4-7 1 liter milk: ~€1-1.50

Montenegro is moderately priced—meals often €10-20 outside fast food.

  • Njeguški pršut (smoked ham)
  • Kačamak (cornmeal with cheese)
  • Cevapi / ćevapi (grilled minced meat)
  • Burek (pastry with meat/cheese)
  • Grilled seafood (mussels, fish from Bay of Kotor)
  • Pljeskavica (burger patty)
  • Kacamak with kaymak (clotted cream)

National drinks: Nikšićko beer, local wines (Vranac red), rakija (fruit brandy), lozovača (grape brandy).

SUGGESTED TIPPING SCALE Tipping not obligatory but appreciated (especially with tourists). Round up or add 5-10% for good service.

  • Restaurant Server: Round up to nearest €1-2 or add 10% (cash preferred).
  • Café Server: Leave small change or round up.
  • Bartender: Not expected, but small tip appreciated.
  • Taxis: Round up or add ~10%.
  • Hotel Staff (bellhop, housekeeping): €1-2 per service/bag if helpful.
  • Guides/Drivers: €5-10 per day if excellent (per person).

No strict rules—tip for exceptional service.

HEALTH & MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS & GUIDELINES No mandatory vaccinations for most travelers; recommend routine (hepatitis A/B, tetanus). Tap water safe in cities but bottled preferred in rural areas. Travel insurance highly recommended—healthcare good in Podgorica and coastal cities, limited rural/mountains. Pharmacies widespread.

TRAVEL INSURANCE Highly recommended—your home health plan may offer limited coverage abroad. Review policies for medical emergencies, trip cancellation, and activities (hiking in Durmitor, rafting on Tara River, sailing in Bay of Kotor). Some credit cards provide basic coverage, but verify adequacy.
