Essential Things to Know Before Traveling to Kazakhstan

CAPITAL Astana (also known as Nur-Sultan from 2019–2022; officially renamed back to Astana in 2022)

OFFICIAL LANGUAGE Kazakh (state language) and Russian (widely used in business, education, media, and daily life). English is increasingly spoken in tourist areas (Almaty, Astana, Turkestan), hotels, restaurants, and by younger people.

RELIGION Kazakhstan is a secular country with no official religion. The majority (~70%) are Muslim (mostly Sunni Hanafi school), with significant Russian Orthodox Christian (~20-26%), Protestant, Catholic, and other minorities (including Jewish, Buddhist, and shamanistic traditions among ethnic groups). Religious tolerance and interfaith harmony are promoted as national values. Mosques and Orthodox churches are common cultural sites—modest dress (cover shoulders/knees, women may cover hair in mosques) is expected when visiting religious places.

PASSPORTS A valid passport is required (valid for at least 3 months beyond planned departure; 6 months recommended).

Visa-free entry for tourism or business stays up to 30 days (extendable in some cases) applies to citizens of the USA, Canada, UK, EU countries, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, UAE, Turkey, and many other nationalities (over 80 countries as of 2026).

For stays longer than 30 days or visa-required nationalities, apply for an eVisa online (via evisa.e-gov.kz, fee ~USD$20-60, processed in 3-5 days). Always check the official Kazakh Ministry of Foreign Affairs website (mfa.gov.kz) or eVisa portal for your nationality and the latest rules, as policies can change. Proof of onward/return ticket, hotel booking, and sufficient funds may be requested. No exit visa required for tourists.

ELECTRICITY Standard voltage is 220V at 50Hz. Power sockets are types C (two round pins) and F (Schuko, two round pins with grounding clips).

Travelers from the US/Canada (Type A/B) or UK (Type G) will need a power adapter. Voltage converters are rarely needed for modern dual-voltage devices (phones, laptops, cameras); check appliance labels. Power outages can occur in rural/remote areas.

CURRENCY INFORMATION Kazakhstan's national currency is the Kazakhstani Tenge (KZT or ₸). Notes: 200, 500, 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000 KZT; coins: 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 Tenge.

Credit Cards: Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted in cities (Astana, Almaty), hotels, restaurants, malls, and tourist areas; American Express less common. Carry cash for rural areas, small shops, markets, bazaars, and public transport.

ATM: ATMs are common in cities and tourist spots (dispense Tenge). International cards work; fees often apply (KZT 500-1,500 ~USD$1-3 per withdrawal + your bank fee). Withdraw larger amounts to minimize fees. Inform your bank of travel.

Currency Exchange: Available at banks, airports, hotels, and exchange offices (banks usually best rates). Avoid street exchanges.

CLOTHING Casual and comfortable is standard. Summers hot/dry (25-40°C/77-104°F in south and steppe)—light, breathable clothing, hat, sunscreen. Winters very cold (-10 to -30°C/14 to -22°F, snowy)—warm coat, boots, gloves, hat, thermal layers. Modest attire for mosques (cover shoulders/knees, women cover hair). Sturdy shoes for hiking (Charyn Canyon, Big Almaty Lake, Altai mountains). Layers essential for variable weather and altitude.

COMMUNICATION & EMAIL Telephone Emergency: 112. International country code: +7.

Mobile Phones Good coverage in cities and along main highways; spotty in remote steppes, mountains, and rural areas. Kazakhstan uses GSM bands (900/1800MHz) and 5G; most unlocked phones work. Roaming expensive. Buy local prepaid SIM (Beeline, Kcell/Activ, Tele2, Altel) at airport (Almaty or Astana) or shops—cheap data plans (tourist SIMs with generous data). eSIMs supported.

Internet Wi-Fi widespread in hotels, cafés, malls, airports, and cities. Mobile data affordable and reliable.

WEATHER & CLIMATE Extreme continental climate: very hot summers, very cold winters; arid steppe/desert in south, mountainous in east/southeast.

Best time overall: May-June and September-October (mild 15-25°C/59-77°F, fewer crowds, ideal for hiking, lakes, and cities). July-August hot (up to 40°C/104°F); winter (December-March) extremely cold (down to -30°C/-22°F) but good for winter sports in Almaty area.

Seasons:

  • December-February: Winter (very cold, snowy)
  • March-May: Spring (variable, warming)
  • June-August: Summer (hot, dry)
  • September-November: Autumn (pleasant, colorful)

Almaty & southeast: Best May-October. Astana/north: Best June-September (avoid extreme winter cold).

MEAL COSTS (approximate, in KZT) Basic lunchtime menu (with drink) in business district: 3,000-6,000 KZT (~$6-12) Combo meal in fast food: 1,500-3,000 KZT (~$3-6) Boneless chicken breast (500g): ~1,500-2,500 KZT (~$3-5) 1 liter milk: ~400-600 KZT (~$0.80-1.20)

Kazakhstan is budget-friendly—meals often under $10-15.

SUGGESTED TIPPING SCALE Tipping not obligatory but appreciated in tourist areas and with good service.

  • Restaurant Server: Round up to nearest 500-1,000 KZT or add 5-10% (cash preferred).
  • Café Server: Leave small change or round up.
  • Bartender: Not expected, but small tip appreciated.

HEALTH & MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS & GUIDELINES No mandatory vaccinations for most travelers; recommend routine (hepatitis A/B, tetanus) and consider rabies if rural/outdoor activities. Tap water not always safe—use bottled. Travel insurance highly recommended—healthcare good in Astana/Almaty, limited rural/remote areas. Pharmacies widespread in cities.

TRAVEL INSURANCE Highly recommended—your home health plan may offer limited coverage abroad. Review policies for medical emergencies, trip cancellation, and activities (hiking in Tian Shan/Altai, horse riding, winter sports). Some credit cards provide basic coverage, but verify adequacy.
